Photosub underwater photography club

Photosub competitions

The club organises 3 competitions each year.

Rules

Annual Splash-in

The rules of the competition are that you may take as many images as you wish, using either film or digital, in the area or areas designated for the competition on the Saturday and the Sunday of the competition. If you are using film, you are responsible for having it processed. With digital images you are responsible for having them converted to images for digital projection.

There is no restriction whatsoever in how you create the final images. With film, double exposures or sandwiched images can be used, although all images must be taken during the competition weekend. Images can also be scanned for manipulation by computer and, if desired, converted back to slide using a commercial facility.

With digital images, including those created from slides, Photoshop or any other manipulation software can be used, without restriction. The entrant must be responsible for all manipulation, although guidance by club members and use of other members equipment can be sought.

Compliance with the above rules, including when the images are taken and how they are prepared for presentation, is based on trust.

Three images can be entered into the competition. Slides can be brought to the final round of the competition when winner selection is made on the night, or sent to the Competition Secretary before the night. Digital entries will be accepted by email to the Competition Secretary up to 3 days prior to the competition presentation. These must be in JPEG format, no wider than 1024 pixels and no higher than 768 pixels.

Slide and digital images will compete ‘head to head’ in a single competition.

Instructions are available on the Photosub website to give guidance on image preparation for the competition.

Only Photosub members are eligible to take part in the competition.

A guest of honour will be chosen, who will be a quality photographer but not an underwater photographer.

The judge will select his choice for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. As well as the winner of the 1st prize receiving the Photosub trophy, which he can hold for one year, each of the three winners receive a trophy and also a prize.

Annual dinner competition

The Categories:

1. Blue Water Projected Images
2. Green Water Projected Images
3. Blue Water Advanced Projected Images
4. Green Water Advanced Projected Images
5. Open Prints

The Rules:

Up to three images may be entered into each category as appropriate.

Anyone who has achieved successes in national or international competitions is expected to go into advanced projected images categories. Members who haven't can enter the non-advanced categories, although they are allowed to enter the advanced categories if they prefer. Anyone deciding to enter the advanced categories cannot enter the non-advanced categories in the same year, but can revert back to the non-advanced categories the following year, unless they win a place in the advanced category. Anyone who wins a place in the non-advanced categories for two years running, would be required to move up to the advanced category.

Photos that have previously come first, second, or third in any national or international competition (club competitions, including Photosub Splash-in are excepted) cannot be used. Photos that have achieved first, second, or third in any national or international portfolio competition can be used.

Previous entries in the Photosub Annual Competition are ineligible.

Photos that won a place in a print competition can be entered in the projected images category and vice versa.

Entries for the Projected Images categories must have been taken within the last two years.

Projected images can only be digital images. Transparencies are no longer accepted, for practical reasons. There is no restriction whatsoever in how you create the final images. Photoshop or any other manipulation software can be used, without restriction. The entrant must be responsible for all manipulation, although guidance by club members and use of other members equipment can be sought.

Three images can be entered into the competition. Digital entries will be accepted by email to the Competition Secretary up to a week prior to the competition presentation. These must be in JPEG format, no wider than 1400 pixels and no higher than 1050 pixels.

Prints must have been taken within the last three years.

Both darkroom and digital prints are acceptable, but marine life prints must fairly represent fauna and/or Flora in a natural way. This does not inhibit the presentation of fauna and/or flora in a pictorial way that is clearly not designed as a ‘natural image’

Prints should be mounted on card and can have a card mount frame. However, the total size of the print entry must be no greater than 50cm X 40cm, including the mount.

All images must have been taken underwater. Swimming pool and aquarium shots are not eligible.

The entrant must be the photographer.

The guest judge's decision is final. Should there be any contention, however, with regard to the rule regarding natural marine life print and digital images the judge will be subsequently asked to adjudicate by reviewing the original digital file or the print.

Open Digital Images Competition

Images can be sent by email or downloaded onto a CD and sent by post. Each image should be resized to a maximum width of 1024 pixels and a maximum height of 768 pixels (images in a portrait format should be 768 pixels along the vertical edge).

Images can be produced either digitally or from film. There is no restriction on the use of digital imaging software.

Images can be taken anywhere underwater, including swimming pools.

The original image must have been taken within the last three years.

The Competition Secretary will select the judge or judges to assess the images and select the winning images. The judges decision is final.

Winning images will be notified by email and on the Photosub website and all entries will be projected at the Photosub meeting following the announcement of the results of the competition.
